Milo Yiannopoulos, a gay conservative who formerly worked as an editor at Breitbart, is once again back in the media’s scope. However, this time it’s not because he did anything controversial, as he often does, but because of the huge success of his new book, ‘Dangerous.’
For those who are not familiar with this ‘dangerous’ man, Milo made headlines last July when he was banned from Twitter for making racially insensitive comments about actress Leslie Jones. The follow February, he made headlines again when violent protesters prevented him from giving a speech on the U.C. Berkeley campus. Milo is certainly one of the most hated conservative figures for his provocateur tendencies, however, his notorious reputation only seems to be working in his favor when it comes to book sales.
Originally, Milo signed a $250,000 book deal with Simon & Schuster back in December of 2016. Soon after the announcement, a huge number of pre-orders sent the book to number 1 on Amazon’s bestseller list. Unfortunately, reality was about to rain on Milo’s parade.
A few months after the announcement of his book, Milo was caught in yet another controversy that would be his most devastating yet. Past videos arose where Milo seemingly defended pedophilia, causing many to begin breaking ties with him, including him being disinvited from speaking at CPAC. Milo, who virtually never apologizes for the things he says, gave in and eventually apologized, saying:
“I am a gay man, and a child abuse victim…My own experiences as a victim led me to believe I could say anything I wanted to on this subject, no matter how outrageous. But I understand that my usual blend of British sarcasm, provocation, and gallows humor might have come across as flippancy, a lack of care for other victims or, worse, advocacy.”
Unfortunately for Milo, the apology wasn’t good enough for Simon & Schuster who then decided to cancel the book deal with Yiannopoulos, causing him to lose an enormous amount of guaranteed money. To many, it seemed as though Milo’s reign of trollery was coming to an end, but everyone soon realized this wasn’t going to keep him down.
After his book deal was canceled, Milo was left without a publisher. This led him to create his own publication, ‘Dangerous Books,’ where he would release his debut book ‘Dangerous,’ which reached number 2 on the ‘New York Times Bestseller List’ last week. In fact, the book is so popular that shortly after the release I was unable to find a copy. Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble were out of stock due to the book’s high demand, indicating that Milo, despite facing continually overwhelming amounts of controversy, is still as relevant as ever.
Thus far, Milo has shown us all that it is not easy to take him down. And when taken down, he comes back stronger, and more popular than before, proving the age-old saying, “Any press is good press.”
