Orania- Africa’s Living Proof that Nationalism Works

Orania, Africa’s only ‘White-only’ town, is located in the eastern edge of South Africa’s Northern Cape.

The town, founded by Carel Boschoff, who served as chairman of the Afrikaner Broederbond from 1980 to 1983, holds a population of 1,300 till June, 2016.

The town is almost exclusively white, with 97.2% of its living citizens white Afrikaners.  Non-whites mostly make up the rest of the population.

Afrikaans remains the most spoken language in the town, which also has its own currency, the Ora, different from the Rand used in the rest of South Africa.

PURPOSE BEHIND THE FORMATION OF ORANIA

The town, though established in 1963, came to become an exclusively white-town in 1991.

Carel Boschoff, the founder of the town, anticipated the after-effects of South Africa’s first-ever democratic election in 1994, and created this town to preserve the heritage and the culture of the Afrikaans, the Dutch-settlers in South Africa.

And he was right.

Since 1994, more than 70,000 whites have been murdered, robbed and raped in the country.

The crime rate in South Africa is significantly high. According to a crime stat published by the South African Police Service, 2.1 million crimes reported from 2015 to 2016, a slight drop from the previous year.

Contact crime and aggravated robbery saw an increase of 5.2% and 1. 01% respectively over the 12 month-period.

Farm murders are significant and most of them are targeted at white Boers (original name for Afrikaner farmers). According to a report in Inquist, farm murders are up for the fifth straight year in a row while farm attacks are down.

123 farm murders and more than 500 farm attacks have been recorded in South Africa, from 2014 to the end of 2015.

Carel Boschoff saw this coming and established this town of Orania for the white Afrikaners.

GOVERNMENT CANNOT INTERVENE

The Constitution of South Africa guarantees their citizens to self-determine themselves, and under this very clause, the town’s ambitions cannot be thwarted. Anyone who defines themselves as an Afrikaans and are willing to learn their culture are willingly accepted by their own Representative Council.

HISTORY OF ORANIA

In December 1990, about 40 Afrikaner families, headed by Carel Boshoff, bought the dilapidated town for around US$200,000. In 1991, 13 white families moved to Orania. The town council was established in February 1992.

After the end of Apartheid, Orania formed its own local government.

ADMINISTRATION

A self-sufficient community, Orania values her Afrikaans heritage and her own local government.

Orania is built on privately-owned land which belongs to the Orania Company. Home-owners can become share-holders of the company as well as representatives of the Representative Council, to decide on how their town should be run.

The representatives are elected on a yearly basis. They serve as the directors and the owners of the land for the time they are elected. It consists of five members and a chairman and no national parties are allowed in Orania’s local elections.

Orania receives no fiscal contributions from either state or provincial government.

The Helpsaam Fund, raises money for projects like subsidiary housing and new-comers to the land are often employed in farms or even in the lower-rungs of the local government.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS TOWN

The crime rate of Orania is negligible, as people leave their houses open while moving outside, without any concern whatsoever. This is in stark contrast to the national crime index of 75.72, fifth on the list of all countries, just below South Sudan.

The unemployment is less than 2%, in comparison to the national unemployment rate of 26.6%.

In the next five years, it is expected Orania will receive 183 million Rands for business developments. The town currently has 127 businesses located within their land.

NATIONALISM PREVAILS

Despite the western world calling Orania a racist town, which undermines South Africa’s rainbow-nation concept, it was built in accordance to South Africa’s Constitution.

Orania is a perfect example of a self-sufficient, one-race-town, based on nationalistic principles and fair systems of local government.

They certainly do not rely on national or provincial subsidy and have every right to “self-determine” their own future on a land, which belongs to them.

Besides, who cares about the white Afrikaners who are slaughtered every day in the country?

Nobody.

GenocideWatch listed South Africa’s genocide rate at 6.

And the people of Orania give them refuge.

Orania finely orchestrates that nationalism prevails. It certainly should not be confused with blatant racism, to separate the races. They have not created any racial superiority in the country but have simply shown a way a province or a town could be run better, with people of similar mindsets.

It is certainly the society the world should look out for.
