France’s Marine Le Pen backs Trump; Declares Hillary Clinton “means war”

Antoine Bayet

Donald Trump has found himself a new international ally in the famous French politician Marine Le Pen.

Marine Le Pen is the President of France’s controversial National Front Party, a self-described center-right party built on principles of nationalism, populism, and freedom from corporate and political influence.

The National Front party was founded by her father, the infamous Jean-Marie Le Pen, who ran many times before on similar platforms.  In 2012, Marine Le Pen won an unprecedented 18% of the popular vote.

In a recent interview on CNN, Le Pen had some choice words about Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and praised Republican candidate Donald Trump.

“All I can say is for France, and it’s all I care about, for France, anything is better than Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton means war. Hillary Clinton is devastation. Hillary Clinton is world instability. Leading us to world conflict.” said Le Pen, on a recent interview on CNN.

Le Pen believes that she and Donald Trump have much in common, stating “We are similar because we are not part of the establishment, we are not part of the system, and we do not depend on anybody and we don’t take orders from anyone.”

During the interview, she also speaks about the positives of Brexit, the hopes for a “Frexit”, and hails the rise of anti-establishment figures such as Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders.

Back in August, Le Pen had praised Donald Trump, calling him “a free man” and that he “responds to people’s hopes.”

In July, she told French magazine Valeurs Actuelles that “Between him and Hillary Clinton, it is clear that I would choose Donald Trump.”

Several media outlets have recognized the similarities between Le Pen and Trump.

In December 2015, The New Yorker headlined “Donald Trump is now America’s Marine Le Pen”.
